Many of our clients come to Medellin to celebrate their bachelor party, before doing so they always ask us questions like; “How is Medellin?” “Is he safe?” And our response is always positive.

The Medellín of today has nothing to do with the Medellín of a few decades ago, and even less at the security level. The city has improved a lot and is in the process of transformation.

Yes, you can safely visit Medellín. Although, as always, you have to use common sense and avoid some areas of the city at night.

Past of city violence

Medellín became the most violent and dangerous city in the world. In 1991, when the Medellín cartel was led by Pablo Escobar, there were more than 11,000 homicides in just one year (about 30 homicides a day) and the city had a rate of 381 homicides per 100,000 inhabitants.

Fortunately, today Medellín has managed to get out of this blacklist carried out by the NGO Seguridad, Justícia y Paz, which currently heads the city of Tijuana (Mexico).

More than two decades later, not only has violence been greatly reduced, but Medellín has become a benchmark for transformation. So much so that in 2013 it received the award for “most innovative city on the planet” by the Urban Land Institute and the Wall Street Journal, ahead of cities such as New York or Tel Aviv.

The reason for this change (nowadays still in process) was thanks to the beginning of the State’s persecution of criminal groups and above all the creation of multiple social projects, infrastructures, and public transport.

The city is currently in full transformation, with the continuous creation of basic services, schools, or projects such as the Escaleras Mecánicas or Metrocable that allow the inhabitants to reduce the transport from work to home in the most conflictive communes located in the mountains of La town.

And above all, the great change is due to the inhabitants of Medellín themselves, who got tired of living in a city marked by death.
